Global Firepower 2026: China’s navy dominance, US in third place

The 2026 Global Firepower Rankings have been released, clearly showing China’s Navy dominance. China has the world’s largest Navy fleet with 841 ships. Russia is in second place with 747 ships, while the United States is in third place with 465 ships.

Countries with strong navies have long been expanding their strategic and military influence around the world. The 2026 rankings, released by Global Firepower and Navy Data, show some significant changes in the structure of the world’s naval power. There are some notable changes in the new list of navies that maintain their influence from the depths of the sea to the surface.

The superpower US has dropped out of the race for the top two spots in terms of total Navy assets, including warships and submarines. China and Russia, however, maintain their lead. One of the most surprising developments this year is the entry of two African countries—Egypt and Nigeria—into the top 25.

They have surpassed many traditional naval powers. According to Global Firepower’s 2026 rankings, China has the world’s largest naval fleet with 841 ships. Russia is in second place with 747 ships, and the United States is in third place with 465 ships.

Differences between Russia and the United States

The gap between Russia and the United States is also worth noting. Russia has 242 more ships than the United States. This means that while it maintains one of the most advanced and capable navies in the world, the United States is not in the top two in terms of total ship numbers.

India is in fourth place with 343 ships, followed closely by Indonesia in fifth place with 338 ships. North Korea is in sixth place with 332 ships. Thailand, Italy, Sweden and Sri Lanka also make the top 10.

Two African countries in the top 25

Two African countries—Nigeria and Egypt—are among the 25 largest navies in the world in 2026.

Nigeria ranks 22nd globally with 152 ships. Egypt ranks 23rd with 149 ships. That is, there is a difference of only three ships between these two African countries.

Nigeria’s position is also special because its maritime areas are very important to the country’s economy and security. The country has a large infrastructure related to oil and gas in its maritime areas. In addition, it is located on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, where maritime security has long been a concern.

Egypt’s position is equally important. However, its maritime importance extends far beyond its coastline. Egypt controls the Suez Canal, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes and a vital link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

America is third in total number of ships

The US Navy is not among the top 10 in terms of total naval vessels. Perhaps most surprising is the fact that the US is in third place in this ranking. Washington has 465 ships, which is significantly less than China and Russia in terms of total numbers.

However, the actual strength of a navy cannot be determined by the number of ships alone. When evaluating the 2026 Global Firepower rankings, it is important to understand the difference between total ship numbers and actual maritime dominance.

Although the US Navy is smaller in size than China and Russia, its navy has been operating very modern warships and submarines around the world. Therefore, the total number of ships alone cannot be used to conclude whether a country’s naval capabilities are weak or strong.

America still ahead in overall military power

The United States remains at the top of the 2026 overall military power rankings. The United States is ranked first with a power index of 0.0741, followed by Russia with a power index of 0.0791, and China with a power index of 0.0919.

India is ranked fourth in terms of military power, followed by South Korea, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Italy in the top 10, respectively.

The Global Firepower Ranking uses more than 60 different factors to determine a nation’s Power Index score. It includes a variety of factors, including the number of military units, financial status, logistical capabilities, and geographical location.

Therefore, the number of naval vessels and overall military power are not the same thing. The 2026 rankings show that while China and Russia have larger naval forces, the United States still has the upper hand overall due to its advanced technology, warships, submarines, and global military reach.
